LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer followed a very familiar script, posting a 2-1 victory over Nevada (1-7-0, 0-1-0) in its Mountain West opener at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field on Friday afternoon. The result marked the second consecutive year that the Aggies have opened conference play with a victory.
All but three of the Aggies' matches this season have been determined by a 2-1 score, including each of the last six games. Nevada recorded the first goal of the match in 49th minute of the second half when the Wolf Pack were able to head in a ball at the far post on a corner kick. Nevada finished the game with 10 corners to the Aggies' six, but it was the only stat that the Wolf Pack held an advantage. Utah State didn't take long to equalize as senior midfielder
Ashley Cardozo dribbled across the top corner of the 18-yard box and placed a ball into the top corner of the far post when the match moved into the 52nd minute. Junior forward
Sara Taylor was awarded the assist on the goal.
Cardozo also contributed to the game-winning goal as her cross in the 86th minute fell at the feet of senior forward
Jordan Foraker and the Alaskan native found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The Aggies finished the match with 14 shots to Nevada's seven, while both keepers logged three goals apiece. Cardozo led the Utah State attack with four shots, including one on goal, and was followed by freshman
Bizzy Arevalo and sophomore
Alex Day with two shots each.
Utah State is back in action on Sunday, traveling to Las Vegas to face UNLV at 2 p.m. (MT). The match will not be available via a video stream, but live stats will be available.
