LOGAN, Utah - Utah State sophomore guard
Steven Ashworth held Boise State's Marcus Shaver Jr. to just 1-for-11 from the floor, but it was Shaver's only bucket of the game that gave the Broncos a 62-59 victory over the Aggies inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Thursday night.
After holding BSU to 3-of-18 from behind the arc in the first 39 minutes of the game, the Broncos knocked down two shots from distance to tie the game with less than a minute and then secured the win with two seconds on the clock as Shaver hit the triple.
Ashworth played the entirety of the game as the Aggies were without the services of junior guard Rylan Ashworth and senior guard
Brock Miller because of injuries. Utah State has only had the luxury of playing one game in league play so far this year with the full complement of its starters.
Ashworth finished the contest with nine points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals as senior forward
Justin Bean led the Aggies with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Bean's rebounds propelled him to sixth all-time in school history as his 879 career rebounds moved him ahead of Tai Wesley (2008-11). Bean also tied Greg Grant (1983-86) for second all-time with his 48th-career game with 10 or more rebounds.
Senior guard
RJ Eytle-Rock made his return after missing the last two games and also scored in double figures, matching Bean's team-high 14 points.
USU (10-9, 1-5 MW) took a 10-point lead at 22-12 midway through the first half after a 3-pointer from Ashworth and a pair of buckets from Eytle-Rock. Boise State (14-4, 5-0 MW) whittled the lead down to five at 24-19, but the Aggies maintained the advantage to hold a 30-24 edge going into the halftime break.
The Broncos tied it up at 33-33 with 16:25 to play after opening the second half on a 9-3 run. The teams continued to trade leads until a 6-0 Utah State run gave the Aggies the 53-50 advantage with 5:38 remaining. USU held onto the lead for the next four minutes as the Aggies led 59-56 with less than a minute left on the clock.
Boise State, who shot just 16.7 percent (3-of-18) in the first 39 minutes of Thursday's game from behind the arc, knocked down a triple to tie it at 59-59 with 51 seconds remaining. Utah State missed a shot on its next possession and Shaver Jr. pulled up from behind the arc on the ensuing possession and logged his only field goal of the night, as the Broncos won, 62-59.
Redshirt senior forward Mladen Armus led the Broncos with 22 points and 19 rebounds, including a game-high 10 offensive boards. Armus' efforts led to 23 second-chance points for the Broncos as the Aggies were outscored in the paint for just the fifth time this season, 40-20. Boise State had two more players finish in double figures as fifth-year senior forward Abu Kigab had 15 points and redshirt senior guard Emmanuel Akot had 11.
Utah State finished the night shooting 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from behind the arc and 75.0 percent (15-of-20) at the free throw line.
Boise State shot 40.0 percent (26-of-65) from the floor, 25.0 percent (5-of-20) from behind the 3-point line and 33.3 percent (5-of-15) at the free throw line.
The Aggies return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 26, hosting San Diego State (10-3, 2-0 MW) at 8:30 p.m., inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The game will be broadcast on FS1.
