LOGAN, Utah – Utah State volleyball (19-8, 11-5 Mountain West) swept Nevada (13-14, 7-9 MW) with three-straight 25-16 victories in its home finale inside the Wayne Estes Center on Saturday.
Prior to the match, USU honored its four seniors for Senior Day, recognizing
Grace DuBay,
Myrthe Maring,
Kylee Stokes and
Emilee Turner for their contributions.
USU never trailed in the match as three Aggies logged 10 kills in Turner, Stokes and senior outside hitter
Shelby Capllonch. Utah State recorded its best hitting percentage of the season with a .406 mark (53-12-101), as five Aggies hit above .350 in senior middle blocker
Kennedi Boyd (.615), Maring (.571), junior outside
Tatum Stall (.421), Stokes (.412) and Turner (.350).
"It is so special," Turner said. "This gym is so fun to play in. I love it. Our team, we are so good together. We can play with anyone on the court, and we are going to do our job and get it done."
Both USU setters gave out over 20 assists as sophomore
Beatriz Rodrigues had 24 and freshman
Leah Wilton-LaBoy had 21. Defensively, Capllonch logged her second-straight double-double with a match-best 11 digs, while Turner and Boyd each had a match-high-tying four blocks. The Aggie defense held the Wolf Pack to a .119 (22-12-84) hitting percentage, including a -.034 mark in set one.
"It was awesome," head coach
Rob Neilson said. "It's fun to see the fans show out and get a sense of what we're building. We're so grateful to the seniors for their part in it. It was fun to play a few different people and see them come out and play great. That's a tribute to how hard they work, sometimes in the shadows. This is such a great group. I'm excited for the rest of the season and moving forward."
Utah State dominated throughout the afternoon as USU opened set one with a 4-0 run, highlighted by kills from Turner and Boyd. Nevada trimmed the lead to 5-3, but that would be the closest the Wolf Pack would get. A 6-1 Aggie spurt, capped by a Boyd and Turner block, extended the margin to 15-7. After chipping the lead down to four, a 3-0 USU run extended the edge to 21-14. A kill from Maring put USU at set point and another Boyd and Turner block gave the Aggies their first 25-16 win of the match.
USU opened set two with a 4-1 lead, fueled by a Turner block and back-to-back Stall and Boyd kills. After some back and forth, four-straight kills from Capllonch and Stokes gave USU a 20-12 edge. The Wolf Pack responded with a 4-0 run, but the Aggies countered with a 5-0 run with kills from Capllonch, Wilton-LaBoy and Turner for another 25-16 victory.
The Aggies once again started off hot, taking a quick 4-0 lead in set three. After trading points, back-to-back Capllonch kills followed by a Boyd service ace gave USU the 9-3 advantage. The teams continued to go back and forth until a kill from Turner, Wolf Pack attacking error and Stall hammer extended the margin to 23-15. Nevada scored once more before recording a service error to give Utah State match point, and a Rodrigues ace clinched the sweep for the final 25-16 win of the day.
