LOGAN, Utah – Utah State safety
Ike Larsen has been named both the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
This is Larsen's second and third weekly honors from the MW. Earlier on Monday, the native of Smithfield, Utah, was also tabbed the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week.
Larsen helped lead the Aggies to a 41-34 victory at Hawai'i last Saturday night at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex in Honolulu. The redshirt freshman safety scored what proved to be the deciding points in the game when he intercepted a pass by UH quarterback Brayden Schager and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown to give USU a 41-24 lead with 4:33 remaining in the fourth quarter.
It was one of a career-high two interceptions Larsen had on the night, upping his team-leading total to four on the season.
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Larsen also had six tackles, including a career-best 2.0 tackles for loss and a career-high-tying 1.0 sacks, against the Rainbow Warriors.
Utah State forced a season-high four turnovers against Hawai'i with three interceptions and a fumble, leading to 13 points. In their last two games alone – both wins – the Aggies have forced six turnovers, while not turning the ball over on offense.
Larsen and the Aggies (5-5, 4-2 Mountain West) return to action on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 7:45 p.m., when they host San José State (6-3, 4-2 MW) in their home finale on Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium. The game will be televised on Fox Sports. Tickets can be purchased
