COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Utah State volleyball (19-10, 11-7 Mountain West) lost 3-1 to Air Force (15-15, 7-11 MW) in its regular season finale on Saturday.
Four Aggies logged double-digit kills on Saturday, as sophomore opposite side hitter Adna Mehmedovic had a career-high-tying 17, junior outside hitter Tatum Stall had 15, senior outside Shelby Capllonch had 11 and senior middle blocker Kennedi Boyd, who hit .588 in the match, had 10. Boyd and graduate middle blocker Myrthe Maring led USU with three blocks each.
Sophomore setter Beatriz Rodrigues recorded a double-double of 20 assists and 10 digs. Redshirt sophomore libero Jordi Holdaway had a match-best 25 digs, while freshman setter Leah Wilton-LaBoy had a team-high 26 assists and three service aces.
A pair of Mehmedovic kills and a Boyd and Stall block gave Utah State the 3-0 lead in set one. The teams traded points until a Falcon 3-0 spurt tied it at 5-apiece. The back and forth continued as neither team held more than a two-point advantage. A Boyd kill and Stall service ace gave tied the set at 22-each, but Air Force closed it out with three-straight points for the 25-22 win.
After Air Force took a 6-3 lead in set two, a 7-1 Utah State run, highlighted by kills from senior opposite Kylee Stokes, Capllonch and Mehmedovic, as well as Boyd and Wilton-LaBoy aces, gave USU the 10-7 lead. The Falcons countered with a 4-0 spurt for the 11-10 edge. The teams went back and forth until a 3-0 USU run followed by a 3-0 AFA run tied the set at 20-apeice.
Utah State was the first to reach set point at 24-23, but Air Force responded with a couple points for its own set point 25-24. There would be five more set points between the teams until USU closed out with a 3-0 spurt, featuring kills from Mehmedovic and Boyd, for the 33-31 win.
Air Force led for the majority of set three until a 4-0 Aggie run, capped by back-to-back Wilton-LaBoy service aces, tied it at 17-apiece. The teams went back and forth until a 3-0 Falcon run gave Air Force set point 24-20. A kill and ace from Stall cut the lead to two before a Falcon kill gave Air Force the 25-22 win.
Kills from Maring, Mehmedovic and Stall gave the Aggies the 4-1 edge in set four. A 4-0 Falcon run later gave AFA the 9-7 advantage. The teams traded points until three-straight kills from Mehmedovic and Stall gave the Aggies the 18-17 edge. A 3-0 run gave Air Force a 21-19 lead, and the Falcons held the advantage for the 25-23 win.
Overall, the Aggies hit .218 (64-28-165), while the Falcons hit .324 (61-14-145).
Utah State, the No. 4 seed at the 2022 Mountain West Volleyball Championships, takes on the fifth seed on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m., in Fort Collins, Colorado.
