LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's basketball lost to Ball State, 80-55, on Wednesday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
The game began as a back-and-forth affair in the first quarter as the Aggies used a 9-2 run to take a 15-13 lead late in the first quarter. USU shot 6-of-13 from the field as Ball State took a 19-15 lead at the end of one. The Cardinals took control of the game in the second quarter, shooting 5-of-8 from 3-point range en route to a 46-23 halftime lead.
Utah State continued to battle in the second half with the teams exchanging short runs through the third quarter. The Aggies outscored the Cardinals in the fourth quarter, 21-18, on the strength of two 3-point field goals from graduate guard
Mayson Kimball but were unable to eat into Ball State's lead prior to the final buzzer.
Kimball led USU with 21 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior guard
Olivia Wikstrom scored in double figures for the second straight contest, finishing with 12 points, seven rebounds and a team-leading three blocks for the game. Graduate guard
Maria Carvalho stuffed the stat sheet with five points, five rebounds and five assists. Graduate forward
Abby Wahl led the Aggies in blocks with three in addition to seven points. Junior guard
Tamiah Robinson also ended with seven points plus six rebounds.
As a team, the Aggies won the rebounding battle, 38-35. USU has outrebounded its opponent in four of its first five games this season. Utah State also shot 15-of-19 from the free throw line for the game, its best shooting performance from the charity stripe so far this season.
