LOGAN, Utah – Utah State's Maria Carvalho has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Dec. 4. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel. 

It is Carvalho's first time in her career being named USU's student-athlete of the week.

With their sponsorship of the Student-Athlete of the Week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.

The native of Lisbon, Portugal, led Utah State women's basketball to a 2-0 record last week with a 74-69 win at Weber State and a 65-55 home win against Utah Valley. Against the Wildcats, Carvalho scored 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and one steal. Carvalho hit two 3-pointers in the closing minutes as part of the decisive run in the victory.

Against the Wolverines, Carvalho had 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range, to go along with six rebounds, four steals and one assist. For the week, Carvalho averaged 19.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game, while shooting 52.2 percent (12-of-23), including 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from 3-point range, and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) at the free throw line. 

Utah State (3-5, 0-0 MWC) continues its non-conference schedule this week when they host BYU (3-5, 0-0 WCC) at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m. (MT).

MEN'S BASKETBALL – Junior guard Max Shulga (Kiev, Ukraine) helped Utah State to a 2-0 record last week with an 86-81 home win against Utah Tech and an 82-64 road win at San Francisco. Against the Trailblazers, Shulga posted his second-straight, and second-career, double-double with 10 points and a career-best 10 assists. He also had four rebounds and a steal against the Trailblazers. Against the Dons, he had 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. For the week, Shulga averaged 13.0 points, 7.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game, while shooting 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the field, 14.3 percent (1-of-7) from 3-point range, and 100.0 percent (9-of-9) at the free throw line.

VOLLEYBALL – Senior outside hitter Shelby Capllonch (Honolulu, Hawaii) led the Aggies with a team-high-tying eight kills, hitting a team-best .273, in Utah State's 3-0 loss to Arkansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last weekend. Capllonch finished with a near-double-double after logging a match-best 10 digs against the sixth-seeded Razorbacks.
