LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's basketball lost to BYU, 64-54, on Tuesday in front of over 2,000 elementary school kids at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
The Aggies started strong, taking a 9-5 lead with three minutes remaining in the first quarter before BYU took control of the game with an 18-4 run spanning the first and second quarters. BYU took a 34-20 advantage into halftime.
The deficit stretched as far as 19 points in the third quarter before the Aggies closed the frame on a 9-0 run to trim the lead to 10 points early in the fourth quarter. Despite multiple attempts to further the comeback, USU was unable to cut the deficit to single digits before the final buzzer.
Graduate guard
Mayson Kimball led the Aggies in both scoring and rebounds, tallying 14 points and five rebounds on the day. Senior forward
Ashya Klopfenstein, making her first start for USU, recorded 12 points and four rebounds. Junior guard
Tamiah Robinson was the final Aggie in double figures with 10 points plus four rebounds and a team-high five assists.
The Aggies forced the Cougars into 32 turnovers for the game, the first time Utah State has forced 30 or more turnovers since forcing Idaho into 30 giveaways in 2011. Junior
Olivia Wikstrom recorded four steals to lead the USU defense in the effort.
