SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Utah State softball (6-7) ended its run at the Silicon Valley Classic I with a 6-4 victory over Cal Poly (0-9) on Sunday.
USU was led by senior shortstop
Lexi Orozco with two RBIs, while six different Aggies registered a hit in the game.
Junior center fielder
Mazie Macfarlane got the scoring started for Utah State in the top of the first after drawing a walk and advancing to third following a single from senior designated player
Gabriella Jimenez. A sacrifice fly from Orozco scored Macfarlane for the early 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
Senior first baseman
Bri Lerma and freshman catcher
Taryn Edds were each able to reach on fielding errors in the top of the second. With two runners on and two outs, sophomore left fielder
Libbie Hawker singled to second to score Edds and advance Lerma. Hawker then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error which brought Lerma home. Macfarlane doubled to left field to plate Hawker.
Freshman second baseman
Ariel Lopez singled to shortstop on the next at-bat to send Macfarlane to third. Lopez stole second as Macfarlane made a try at the next 60 feet. Macfarlane looked to get caught in a jam as Lopez made her way to third, but the Mustangs ended up tagging Lopez just after Macfarlane touched home plate for the Aggies' fourth run of the frame as USU led 5-1.
Cal Poly put up one run in the bottom of both the fourth and fifth innings to trim the USU edge to 5-3.
For the second time in as many days, Orozco hit a leadoff home run. With the count at 1-0 in the top of the sixth, Orozco got under the ball for a solo homer to center to put the Aggies up 6-3.
The Mustangs added one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but USU held on in the seventh for the 6-4 victory.
Senior
Kapri Toone made the start in the circle for the Aggies, recording two strikeouts in her 4.0 innings of work. She was relieved by junior
Alyssa Millemon, who pitched for 1.0 innings. Sophomore
Jessica Stewart came in for the save in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Utah State next travels to San Diego, California, for the San Diego Classic from Friday, March 4, to Sunday, March 6.
