USU MBB NOTES - USU Men’s Basketball Travels to Wyoming in Battle of the Two Hottest Teams in the MW

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State plays its sixth contest in 13 days when the Aggies face Wyoming in Laramie on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.

Opening Tips
• Wyoming leads the all-time series 51-33, capturing a 71-69 win against USU in Logan on Jan. 15, and snapping a six-game Aggie winning streak against the Cowboys.

• Utah State currently has the longest winning streak in the MW, having won each of its last five games, while Wyoming is second with a four-game winning streak.

• Over the five-game stretch, USU is shooting 53.3 percent (146-of-274) from the floor, averaging 78.8 points per game, recording nine 3-point field goals per game and winning the battle of the boards by 11.4 rebounds per contest. USU is 14-2 on the year when outrebounding its opponent.

• Over the same stretch, USU opponents are shooting 41.6 percent (107-of-257) from the floor, making six 3-point field goals per game and averaging just 57.8 points per contest.

• In its last game against UNLV, Utah State shot a season-high 64.0 percent (32-of-50) from the floor - the best performance since shooting 65.1 percent (28-of-43) against Fresno State on Jan. 5, 2012.

• Utah State has shot 60 percent or better from the floor in two of the last three games.

• The Aggies have knocked down 10 triples in four of the last five games. USU is 10-1 on the year when making 10 or more from behind the arc this season.

• After losing five of its first six league contests by 2.7 points per game, USU has now beaten each of its last five league foes by at least 15 points per game.

• Utah State is averaging 21.8 assists per game over its last five and is 11-0 this season when logging 20 or more assists in a game.

• Over the last two games, USU has committed five and seven turnovers, respectively, carrying an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.8 and 3.1, respectively.

• Utah State is third in the nation in total assists (440), fifth in assists per game (18.3), 13th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.48) and 15th in field goal percentage (.486).

• Utah State's leading scorers, senior forward Justin Bean (18.7 ppg), graduate forward Brandon Horvath (12.8 ppg) and junior guard Sean Bairstow (10.3 ppg) are all shooting better than 50 percent from the floor. Bean is shooting 57.0 percent (171-of-300) from the floor and 51.6 percent (33-of-64) from behind the arc, Horvath is shooting 50.9 percent (115-of-226) and Bairstow is shooting 51.9 percent (69-of-133).

• Horvath has been stuffing the stat sheet over the last three games averaging 17.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 1.7 blocks and 0.7 steals per game, all while shooting 62.5 percent (20-of-32) from the floor, including 72.0 percent (18-of-25) from inside the 3-point arc. Horvath has scored in double figures in each of the last five games.

• Bean recorded his 41st career double-double against UNLV, finishing the game with 32 points and 10 rebounds to move to third all-time in MW history. Bean also ranks third in USU history.

• Bean is among the nation's leaders in multiple statistics, ranking fifth in double-doubles (15), ninth in total rebounds (238), total field goals made (171) and total minutes (849:26), 13th in defensive rebounds per game (7.38) and total points (449), 16th in rebounds per game (9.9) and 25th in FG percentage (.570).

Series Notables
• Utah State and Wyoming meet for the 85th time on Tuesday night, marking the seventh-longest series in USU basketball history.

• Wyoming is one of only three teams in the MW with a winning record against the Aggies (San Diego State/UNLV). Most of the Cowboy victories (36) came prior to the 1959-60 season. Since that time, Utah State leads the all-time series 16-15 and has won six of the last seven.

• Points in the paint have proven to be critical between the two clubs as the team that has scored more inside has won the game 15 of the last 17 times.

• Utah State has had at least three players score in double figures in all but three games against Wyoming during the MW era.

• Junior guard Sean Bairstow made a career-high five free throws against the Cowboys in the last meeting on Jan. 15.

• Sophomore guard Max Shulga attempted a career-high six 3-point field goals against the Cowboys on March 4, 2021.

• Junior guard Rylan Jones made a season-high seven field goals on a season-high 14 attempts, including a season-high 10 3-point field goal attempts, in the last meeting against the Cowboys on Jan. 15.

• Senior forward Justin Bean attempted a career-high 20 field goals against the Cowboys on March 4, 2021. 

• Bean has logged a double-double in the three of the last four games against Wyoming.
