SAN JOSE, Calif. – Utah State softball (9-13) lost both of its Saturday games at the Silicon Valley Classic II after falling 5-1 to UC Davis (9-11) and 6-2 to San José State (14-8).
Senior right fielder
Sydnee Smith led the Aggies with two hits on the day, while senior shortstop
Lexi Orozco led with two RBIs. Defensively, USU was led by senior first baseman
Bri Lerma with 13 putouts and one assist.
Junior center fielder
Mazie Macfarlane scored the USU Aggies' lone run in Game 1 against the UC Davis Aggies. Macfarlane drew a walk in the top of the first, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Macfarlane made it the last 60 feet before USU's second batter in the rotation, sophomore left fielder
Libbie Hawker, finished her at-bat.
Macfarlane's run would be it for Utah State as UC Davis scored one run in both the bottom of the second and third innings and brought home three runs in the bottom of the fourth to win 5-1.
Junior
Nya Laing made the start in the circle for USU in Game 1, where she pitched for 3.0 innings. She was relieved by freshman
Mia Reynolds for 1.0 innings. Reynolds was relieved by senior
Kapri Toone for the final 2.0 innings as Toone recorded two strikeouts and one walk.
San José State took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the second game of the day. The Spartans extended their lead to 6-0 after recording one run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth.
Freshman third baseman
Claudia Medina and Macfarlane each drew walks in the top of the sixth. After an Aggie strike out and foul out, Macfarlane and Medina advanced to second and third, respectively, on a wild pitch. Orozco brought the pair home with a two-RBI single up the middle. However, that would be it for USU as SJSU held on for the 6-2 victory.
Sophomore
Jessica Stewart made the start in the circle for the Aggies and was relieved by Toone in the top of the first. Toone recorded four strikeouts and one walk in her 3.0 innings of work. She was relieved by Laing, who pitched for 3.0 innings and recorded two strikeouts and three walks.
Utah State concludes its run at the Silicon Valley Classic II on Sunday, March 13, as the Aggies take on Santa Clara (11-16) at 11 a.m. (MT).
