Box Score 2 SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Utah State softball (6-9) lost 5-0 to Stony Brook (6-1) before falling 10-4 to Long Beach State (6-9) on the first day of the San Diego Classic on Friday.
Senior shortstop Lexi Orozco led the Aggies with three hits and three RBIs on the day. Defensively, senior first baseman Bri Lerma led the team with 13 putouts on Friday.
After a two-and-a-half-hour rain delay, Utah State lost 5-0 to Stony Brook in its first game at the San Diego Classic.
SBU scored three runs in the bottom of the first and added two more in the bottom of the second to hold a 5-0 lead. USU put a runner in scoring position twice in the remaining innings, but the Aggies were unable to make it home as the Seawolves won 5-0.
Junior Nya Laing made the start for the Aggies in the circle in game one, where she pitched for all 6.0 innings. Laing finished the game with three strikeouts and one walk.
USU trailed LBSU 5-0 early in game two as the Beach scored two runs in the top of the first and three in the top of the second.
Utah State bounced back to make it a one-run game in the bottom of the third as the Aggies scored four runs in the frame. Back-to-back singles from sophomore left fielder
Libbie Hawker and junior center fielder
Mazie Macfarlane put Aggie runners on first and second. After a USU groundout, senior catcher
Gabriella Jimenez hit a shot through the right side to score Hawker.
Orozco stepped up to the plate and hit a three-run homer to left center to cut the Long Beach State lead to 5-4.
Long Beach State scored five runs in the top of the fifth and held on for the 10-4 win.
Sophomore
Jessica Stewart made the start in the circle for the Aggies in game two, pitching for 1.1 innings. She was relieved by freshman
Mia Reynolds, who recorded three strikeouts in here 2.2 innings of work. Reynolds was relieved by junior
Alyssa Millemon, who pitched 0.2 innings. Laing entered the circle for the final 2.2 innings.
Utah State continues its run at the San Diego Classic on Saturday, March 5, as the Aggies take on Boston (5-9) at noon (MT), and UC San Diego (7-8) at 5 p.m. (MT), at Triton Softball Field.
