SAN JOSE, Calif. - Utah State men's basketball outscored San José State 47-26 in the second half of its regular season finale in San Jose, California, on Friday night as the Aggies defeated the Spartans 75-52.
Senior forward
Justin Bean posted his 45th career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds to tie for second all-time in both USU and Mountain West history. Bean's 11 rebounds pushed his season total to 305 as he became just the third Aggie to record 300-plus rebounds in two different seasons.
Three more Aggies finished the game in double figures as senior forward
Brandon Horvath had 16 points, junior guard
Sean Bairstow had 13 and sophomore guard
Max Shulga had 11.
It was a game of runs in the first half as SJSU (8-22, 1-17 MW) took an early 7-2 lead with 14:56 remaining. USU (17-14, 8-10 MW) responded with a 14-3 run capped by a Horvath 3 to hold the 16-10 advantage with 10:18 to go in the period.
It was then the Spartans' turn for a run as SJSU outscored USU 13-3 to hold a 23-19 edge with 4:50 on the clock.
The teams went back and forth in the final four-and-a-half minutes of the half. A layup from junior guard
Rylan Jones with 58 seconds on the clock gave Utah State a 28-26 lead heading into the halftime break.
It was a different story in the second half as the Aggies outscored the Spartans 47-26 in the period.
Utah State opened the half with a 7-0 run to take a 35-26 lead with 17:37 to go following layups from senior guard
RJ Eytle-Rock and Bean, along with a Jones triple. San José State trimmed the lead to 37-33, but that would be as close as it would get in the period.
A deep Bean 3 capped a 16-5 Aggie run to push USU's lead out to 53-38 with just under 10 minutes to play. After a Spartan layup trimmed the margin to 61-47, Utah State outscored San José State 14-5 in the final five minutes as USU came away with the 75-52 victory.
USU finished the night shooting 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the field, a season-high-tying 50.0 percent (11-of-22) from behind the arc and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) at the free throw line.
