LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (18-15, 4-0 MW) remains undefeated in Mountain West action after posting a 2-0 win against Colorado State (11-17, 3-4 MW) at LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field on Friday.
The victory extended USU's win streak to six games, the longest streak since the Aggies won six-straight in 2017. Utah State's 4-0 start in MW play is also its best start in league action since USU started 11-0 in the Intermountain Athletic Conference in 1981, the same year the Aggies won the AIAW World Series.
"It was good," head coach
Steve Johnson said. "Riding a six-game winning streak, they're going to come in all different forms and fashion. We've had a few more runs in the last five, and this time it really came down to pitching and defense. We played great defense and Mia really stayed around the zone and kept the ball in the park and limited the free passes. We played really well today."
Mia Reynolds pitched her second complete-game shutout of the season after the freshman spent all seven innings in the circle, recording two strike outs and one walk.
"It feels amazing to have as much trust in my team and know that they're behind me," Reynolds said. "I didn't really realize until the end that it was a shutout. I was just focused on one pitch at a time and taking it one batter at a time. I was just focused on what we needed to be done at-hand."
The Aggies won each of their last five games by scoring at least four runs, combining for 41 runs during the stretch. However, it was a different story on Friday.
Junior center fielder
Mazie Macfarlane drew a walk to lead off for USU in the bottom of the first. Senior catcher
Gabriella Jimenez scored Macfarlane with a homer to right field to give Utah State the 2-0 lead. The home run proved to be the determining factor of the game as neither team scored in the remaining innings.
Utah State and Colorado State will play Game 2 of the three-game series on Saturday, April 2, at noon.
