LOGAN, Utah – Utah State women's track & field graduate senior
Katie Haviland has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, April 10. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
Haviland won the 3,000-meter steeplechase this past weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California, with a time of 10:12.29. A new personal best, Haviland's time is the 22nd-fastest in the nation this season. Haviland remains second all-time in the event at Utah State.
It is Haviland's third time in her career being named USU's student-athlete of the week. Haviland previously won the award in April 2021 after setting the Davis Field record in the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 17:01.23 seconds at the Idaho State-hosted Bengal Invitational. She also won the award in November 2021 after finishing 10th at the MW Cross Country Championships with a time of 20:05.10.
Utah State track & field is set to continue the outdoor season next weekend at the BYU-hosted Robison Invitational. Competition is slated for Friday through Saturday, April 22-23, in Provo, Utah.

Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included:
GOLF – Senior Jesse Henderson (Farmington, Utah) tied for 17th place at 3-over 147 (75-72) at the weather-shortened UC Santa Barbara Classic. Henderson carded the best round of the day for the Aggies during their final 18 holes as he shot an even-par 72. Henderson tied for the tournament lead in par-5 scoring at 7-under. The Aggies finished with a 36-hole score of 18-over 594 on the 7,040-yard, par-72 Sandpiper Golf Club.
SOFTBALL – Senior catcher Gabriella Jimenez (Sacramento, California) led Utah State to a 2-1 Mountain West home series against Nevada last weekend (L, 9-10 (8); W, 6-5; W, 8-7). In Game 1, Jimenez was 2-for-4 at the plate with one home run and posted three RBIs. In Game 2, Jimenez was 2-for-4 at the plate, including the game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh and a double, while posting three RBIs. In Game 3, Jimenez went 3-for-4 at the plate, including two solo home runs. She again posted a game-tying home run with a solo shot to right center in the bottom of the sixth. For the week, Jimenez batted a .583 (7-of-12) with four home runs, eight RBIs, five runs scored, 20 total bases and a slug percentage of 1.667. Defensively, she led the Aggies with 18 putouts and six assists.
MEN'S TENNIS – Junior Javier Ruiz (Lausanne, Switzerland) posted a 2-0 record and delivered the clinching point in Utah State's 4-3 Mountain West home win against Boise State last weekend. In singles play, Ruiz posted a three-sets win at the No. 6 spot (7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4) and teamed with sophomore Jack Ninteman for a 7-6 (5) win at the second doubles position to help USU secure the doubles point to open the match.
WOMEN'S TENNIS – Senior Gabrielle Dekkers (Ammerzoden, Netherlands) posted a 2-0 doubles record last weekend as Utah State lost a pair of Mountain West matches at Wyoming (4-1) and to Colorado State (4-0) in Laramie, Wyoming. Against the Cowgirls, Dekkers teamed with junior Sidnee Lavatai for a 6-4 win at the second position to help the Aggies secure the doubles point. Against the Rams, Dekkers and Lavatai again notched a 6-4 win at the second position. Both of Dekkers' singles matches were left unfinished.
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD – Sophomore
Brennan Benson (Orem, Utah) set the sixth-fastest time in school history in the outdoor 1,500 meters last weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California. Benson finished in a time of 3:44.96, placing 84th out 149 participants in the invitational section of the event.
