LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (20-15, 6-0 MW) completed its second-straight series sweep in Mountain West action as USU posted a 6-1 victory over Colorado State (11-19, 3-6 MW) on Sunday at LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field. Sunday's victory extended the Aggie win streak to eight.
"It feels great to get the weekend sweep," senior catcher
Gabriella Jimenez said. "We've been working our tails off this whole season and in the fall. We've been waiting for this moment and are very proud."
The eight-game winning streak is just the seventh time in program history that USU has won at least eight-straight games and is just the second time the Aggies have done so since the turn of the century as Utah State won eight in a row in 2014.
Utah State's 6-0 mark in Mountain West play is its second-best start in league action in program history, trailing USU's 11-0 start in the Intermountain Athletic Conference in 1981, the same year the Aggies won the AIAW World Series.
"Any conference series win is great," head coach
Steve Johnson said. "If you want to win a conference title, you have to have a few sweeps in there. To get the first two series out of the way with sweeps is huge for us. Right now, we're playing with a lot of confidence. We're playing well. We just have to keep building on it."
Senior
Kapri Toone pitched her second-straight complete game after she recorded a complete-game shutout in USU's 2-0 win over CSU on Saturday. Toone struck out four Ram batters on Sunday.
Utah State scored all six of its runs on a home run on Sunday.
Jimenez registered the first homer of the day and her second of the weekend with a three-run blast in the bottom of the first to score herself, junior center fielder
Mazie Macfarlane and freshman third baseman
Claudia Medina to give USU the 3-0 edge.
Sophomore designated player
Libbie Hawker recorded her first career home run with a two-run bomb in the bottom of the fourth that also scored senior right fielder
Bri Lerma to extend the Aggie lead to 5-0.
Colorado State scored one run in the top of the sixth to trim the edge to 5-1.
Lerma rounded out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with a homer right down the left field line to help seal the 6-1 Utah State victory.
Utah State next travels to Fresno, California, to take on Fresno State (8-26, 2-7 MW), on Friday, April 8, Saturday, April 9, and Sunday, April 10.
