LOGAN, Utah – Utah State football held its 18th practice of fall camp Wednesday morning and the Aggie quarterbacks bring a lot of knowledge and talent to the field heading into the 2022 season. In fact, USU probably has more talent and depth here than any other team in the Mountain West.
"We've had a solid camp and there's a lot of competition in the room," said second-year offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach
Anthony Tucker. "We have a lot of various levels of experience. Logan (Bonner) is obviously back. Cooper (Legas) gained a ton of experience last year. Levi (Williams) has come in and has played a lot of college football. Then, we have a really talented young group of quarterbacks. We've had a really solid camp and are moving in the right direction."
Highlighting this group is graduate senior
Logan Bonner, who set five single-season school records during the 2021 season with 3,628 passing yards, 36 touchdown passes, four touchdown passes in three-straight games, four touchdown passes in six games in a season and 2.57 touchdown passes per game. Bonner, who was in his first season with the Aggies in 2021, finished the year completing 263-of-429 (.613) passes to rank fourth in school history in completions, sixth in attempts and seventh in completion percentage. He also produced 3,694 yards of total offense to rank as the second-most in school history. Additionally, his 36 touchdown passes tied for the fourth-most in MW history and the seventh-most in school history, while his completion percentage ranks third all-time at USU.
Bonner was also named the Offensive MVP of the MW Championship Game as he was 29-of-42 passing for 318 yards and four touchdowns, setting season highs in both completions and attempts, not to mention setting championship game records for most passing touchdowns and most touchdowns responsible for (4).
"Obviously, it's the last fall camp for me and I'm excited to be out here with the guys," said Bonner. "Overall, the group's done really well. They've done a good job of learning every day and pushing each other. We have a lot of talent and a lot of knowledge in that room. It's really special to have guys who have played like that, including me, Cooper and Levi. It's very rare to have a room like that, which helps the team."
Utah State also returns junior Legas, a junior, who led the team to its first-ever bowl win against a Power 5 opponent in 2021. Legas, who was playing in just his second-ever game, was 11-of-20 passing for 171 yards and two touchdowns in USU's Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl win.
Another player returning here is sophomore Garrett Larsen, who will be entering his third season with the Aggies this fall, but has not appeared in any games.
Utah State also added a veteran transfer to this group in Williams, a sophomore, who spent three seasons at Wyoming (2019-21), as he played in 18 games with 12 starts. Overall, Williams was 150-of-278 (.540) passing for 2,210 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, while rushing for 763 yards on 168 carries (4.5 ypr) and 13 touchdowns during his time with the Cowboys. Williams was also named the Offensive MVP of the 2021 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, as he rushed for a career-high 200 yards on 16 carries (12.5 ypr) and a career-best four touchdowns against Kent State, while also completing 9-of-11 passes for 127 yards and another touchdown.
Utah State also welcomes two freshmen to this group in
Bishop Davenport (Spring, Texas/Spring HS) and
Chase Tuatagaloa (Orem, Utah/Orem HS).
Utah State will open the 2022 season on Saturday, Aug. 27, when it hosts Connecticut at 2 p.m., in a game that will be nationally televised on Fox Sports 1. USU then plays at Alabama on Saturday, Sept. 3, and hosts Weber State on Saturday, Sept. 10, before beginning MW play at home against UNLV on Saturday, Sept. 24, in a game that will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network at 5 p.m.
