LOGAN, Utah – Utah State graduate quarterback
Logan Bonner has been named to the 2022 Manning Award Watch List, it was announced Monday.
Bonner is among 30 players, including two from the Mountain West and two from the Beehive State, on the watch list.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
Five of last year's Manning Award finalists are included on this year's Watch List, led by the 2021 Manning Award winner Bryce Young from Alabama. Joining Young as returning finalists are Brennan Armstrong (Virginia), Sam Hartman (Wake Forest), Will Rogers (Mississippi State) and C.J. Stroud (Ohio State).
The only player from the MW on the list is Fresno State's Jake Haener, while BYU's Jaren Hall also made the list.
During the 2021 campaign, Bonner set five single-season school records with 3,628 yards passing, 36 touchdown passes, four touchdown passes in three-straight games, four touchdown passes in six games in a season and 2.57 touchdown passes per game.
On the season, Bonner was 263-of-429 (.613) passing to rank fourth in school history in completions, sixth in attempts and seventh in completion percentage. He also had 3,694 yards of total offense to rank as the second-most in school history.
Bonner's 36 touchdown passes a year ago are tied for the fourth-most in a single season in Mountain West history and the seventh-most in school history for a career. Five of those TD passes came in the Aggies' 35-10 win at New Mexico, tying the single-game school record.
In helping lead Utah State to its first-ever Mountain West title with a dominating 46-13 victory at No. 19 San Diego State, Bonner set championship game records for most passing touchdowns (4) and most touchdowns responsible for (4).
Bonner was named the offensive MVP of the MW championship game after completing 29-of-42 passes for 318 yards and those four TDs, setting season highs in both completions and attempts.
The 6-foot-1, 230-pound native of Rowlett, Texas, is also on the Maxwell Award and Davey O'Brien Preseason watch lists, and is a preseason second-team all-Mountain West selection by both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele.
Inclusion on the Watch List is not necessary for the quarterbacks to be selected for the honor. Additional quarterbacks are expected to be added to the Watch List during the season. Finalists will be selected prior to the postseason and the winner will be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
The winner will again be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowls.
Utah State opens the 2022 season at home against Connecticut on Saturday, Aug. 27. The game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports 1, at 2 p.m.
