Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |
PROVO, Utah – Utah State volleyball (2-1) lost 3-0 to No. 7 BYU (4-0) in Provo, Utah, on Thursday night.

Senior outside hitter Shelby Capllonch hit a team-best .417 in the match with six kills, while redshirt freshman outside Kaylie Ray posted five. Utah State was led by freshman setter Leah Wilton-LaBoy with 11 assists, redshirt sophomore libero Jordi Holdaway with 11 digs and graduate opposite side hitter Emilee Turner with three blocks. Wilton-LaBoy and Ray both recorded a match-high-tying two service aces.

The Cougars jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in set one. Turner posted the first kill of the night as the Aggies trimmed the lead to 9-3. After a Capllonch kill, BYU extended its lead to double-digits and maintained the edge for the remainder of the set to win 25-9.

The second set was closer as a Turner kill, along with a block from Turner and senior middle blocker Kennedi Boyd, kept Utah State within one at 3-2. The Cougars gained momentum to take a 10-point lead, but a Capllonch kill to cap a 4-0 Aggie run cut the BYU advantage to 18-12. BYU extended its lead back out to eight, but back-to-back Ray kills trimmed the edge to 22-16. USU would score once more as BYU won the set 25-17.

The Aggies took their first lead of the night in the third as a Capllonch kill to open the set gave USU the 1-0 advantage. After some back-and-forth, a kill from sophomore opposite side hitter Katie Langford gave Utah State its final lead 4-3. BYU turned around with a 15-4 run to lead 18-8. The Aggies got within eight following kills from Boyd and senior opposite side hitter Kylee Stokes, as well as a Wilton-LaBoy ace, at 19-11, but that would be as close as it would get as the Cougars won the third 25-14.

Utah State next takes on No. 10 Pittsburgh (2-1) in Provo on Friday, Sept. 2, at 5 p.m.
