RENO, Nev. – Utah State volleyball (10-4, 2-1 Mountain West) posted a straight-set victory over Nevada (7-7, 1-2 MW) in the Aggies' first Mountain West road contest of the season on Thursday night.
The Aggies had one of their best offensive performances of the season, hitting .330 (46-11-106). On the reverse, Utah State held Nevada to a .070 mark (26-18-115), the lowest hitting percentage for a USU opponent this season.
Junior outside hitter
Tatum Stall led the Aggies with 13 kills in the match, hitting .400 (13-1-30). Both Aggie middles hit above .700 as senior
Kennedi Boyd hit .769 (10-0-13), while redshirt freshman
Bella Wooden hit .750 (6-0-8).
Freshman setter
Leah Wilton-LaBoy led USU with 20 assists, followed closely by sophomore setter
Beatriz Rodrigues with 19.
Defensively, two Aggies recorded double-digit digs as redshirt sophomore libero
Jordi Holdaway had 21 and senior outside
Shelby Capllonch had 11. Boyd finished the night with a match-best five blocks.
A Rodrigues service aces gave Utah State the early 5-1 lead in set one. After Nevada trimmed the margin to one, a Wooden kill followed by a block from Wooden and senior opposite side hitter
Kylee Stokes gave USU the 9-6 edge. Back-to-back kills from graduate opposite
Emilee Turner later extended the Aggie advantage to 17-11. A Turner kill gave Utah State set point before Boyd clinched the victory with a hammer for the 25-19 USU win.
It was a tight battle in set two as it featured 16 ties and five lead changes. A Stokes kill, along with a Stokes and Wooden block, gave the Aggies the 8-7 lead before the Wolf Pack came back to take a one-point edge. The set continued to go back and forth until a 5-2 Nevada run gave the Wolf Pack the 18-16 advantage.
A Boyd and Stall block along with kills from Wooden, Boyd and Stall put the Aggies on top 20-18. After Nevada tied it once more, back-to-back Stall kills and a hammer from redshirt freshman outside
Kaylie Ray gave USU the 23-20 edge. A Boyd kill put USU set point and a Stall service ace gave Utah State the 25-21 victory.
After a Wolf Pack kill trimmed the Aggie advantage to two in set three, an 11-2 USU run gave Utah State the 15-6 lead. A 3-0 Nevada spurt was quickly countered by a Stokes kill, Stokes and Boyd block and a Wolf Pack attack error as USU took the 21-10 lead. The Wolf Pack scored twice more before the Aggies closed out the set with a 4-0 run, capped by kills from Boyd and Ray, for the 25-12 set victory and match sweep.
Utah State continues its road trip with a stop in San Jose, California, as the Aggies take on San José State (9-4, 3-0 MW) on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. (MT).
