LOGAN, Utah — Utah State soccer (6-6-1, 3-1 MW) picked up its third-straight win and another three points in Mountain West play with a 2-1 victory over Wyoming Sunday afternoon at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field.
"We knew this was going to be a tough one, facing Wyoming. They're well-coached, they're really clear in their identity and really strong in transition moments," said Utah State head coach
Manny Martins. "We felt like if we could create and finish two or three chances early maybe we could gain a little bit of separation, but credit to them, they made it difficult for us to create chances. It was a good game and we're happy to get the three points."
While facing last year's Mountain West regular season co-champions, the Aggies came out of the gates firing. USU recorded four shots in the first five minutes of action including a header from junior forward
Bizzy Arevalo that narrowly missed the top corner of the goal just 19 seconds in.
It didn't take long for Utah State to get on the board, as senior defender
Kylie Olsen put the team on top in the 11th minute with a strike following a mishandled ball from the Wyoming keeper. Olsen, who scored the 90th minute game-winner in Thursday's victory over Colorado State, has now scored in back-to-back outings after going the first 64 games of her collegiate career without a goal. Her goal was assisted by sophomore forward
Tess Werts and Arevalo.
In the 32nd minute, USU sophomore midfielder
Kaylie Chambers drew Wyoming keeper Miyuki Schoyen off her line for a hard tackle and a foul to set up a penalty kick for the Aggies. Chambers calmly found the bottom right corner of the net for her first goal of the season to make it a 2-0 Utah State advantage.
The two-score lead didn't last for long, as Wyoming's Michaela Clark found the back of the net from around 25 yards out in the 36th minute, but it was all Utah State the rest of the way as the Cowgirls were held with just a single shot through the remaining 54 minutes of action.
The Aggies took 22 shots in the outing, second-most by the team in any game this season, while holding Wyoming to just seven. They were led by freshman midfielder
Summer Diamond, whose six shots in the match were the most by any USU player since
Sara Taylor also recorded six on Aug. 24, 2022, against Illinois State.
Graduate keeper
Diera Walton played all 90 minutes in net for Utah State, recording three saves on four shots faced. The Aggies have now faced nine-straight opponents without conceding multiple goals.
This is the first time Utah State has won three-consecutive Mountain West contests since doing so to close out the season in 2020. With this result, Utah State now sits third in the Mountain West standings with nine points, narrowly behind Boise State and San Diego State, who have 10 points apiece.
Utah State now heads back on the road for a pair of games next week, first taking on New Mexico on Thursday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m., in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The match will be streamed on Mountain West Network, with links to the live stream and stats available on utahstateaggies.com.
