MONTERREY, Mexico – Utah State's golf team is coming back to the States with some hardware.

The Aggies concluded their fall slate by capturing the team title at the inaugural Monterrey Collegiate Classic on Saturday at Club Campestre Monterrey.

USU shot a school-record 29-under 835 to edge runner-up North Dakota State by one stroke at the par-72, 7,141-yard course. The Aggies entered the final day in fourth place, eight shots back of Loyola Maryland. In fact, they trailed by nearly 20 strokes before making the comeback.

"It took a full team effort," veteran Utah State head coach Dean Johansen said. "To come back on the final day from 19 shots down is amazing. The guys on this team have guts."

The victory marked Utah State's 22nd team title in program history, including its first since the 2020-21 campaign.

"It was just a matter of time," USU junior Julio Arronte Sanchez said. "We have been putting a lot of effort in lately and to finally get I done feels amazing, especially playing at home and in front of family and friends."

The 29-under was 12 strokes better than the previous program record for a 54-hole score, which the Aggies shot during the 2022-23 season at the UC San Diego Invitational. Utah State's 11-under 277 in the second round is tied for seventh all-time in school history for an 18-hole score.

During the final 18 holes of play on Saturday, the Aggies shot a 10-under 278, which is tied for 10th all-time in school history.

Furthermore, the Aggies were at 19-under 557 through 36 holes, which set another school record, bettering the 16-under 560 set during the 2019-20 season at the Colorado-hosted Mark Simpson Invitational.

Arronte Sanchez, a native of Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, led the Aggies as the junior placed second with a career-best 14-under 202.

"It feels awesome," Arronte Sanchez said. "Like I said before, we have been working very hard and to see the reflection of what we do every day inside and outside of the golf course motivates me to keep going."

Arronte Sanchez tied for the tournament lead in par-3 scoring with an average of 2.87. He finished with a team-best 16 birdies, to go along with one eagle and 33 pars.

"My mindset was the same, just like it has been in every other event – control what I can control and give 100 percent effort on every shot," Arronte Sanchez said.

Arronte Sanchez's 14-under 202 ranks fifth all-time for the lowest 54-hole score in program history. His 13-under 131 after the first two rounds ranks second for the lowest 36-hole score and it's the lowest an Aggie has shot since Jay Don Blake was at 12-under 132 during the 1979-80 campaign.

After the first 18 holes of play, Arronte Sanchez had matched his career low at 7-under 65, which is tied for 10th all-time in school history.

Ashton McArthur continued his stellar fall season as the freshman tied for 11th at 8-under 208. Junior Luis Gerardo Cantu, a native of Monterrey, tied for 20th with a career-best 4-under 212.

Freshman Enrique Karg tied for 31st at 1-over 217 and junior Esteban Jaramillo tied for 35th at 2-over 218. Playing as an individual, senior Cole Enlow tied for 39th at 3-over 219. He shot a career-best 5-under 67 in the opening round.
