LARAMIE, Wyo. – Utah State volleyball (18-5, 11-1 Mountain West) won all eight of its October matches as the Aggies closed out the month with a 3-1 road victory at Wyoming (16-7, 5-7 MW).
A trio of Aggies logged double-digit kills in the match as graduate senior outside hitter
Shelby Capllonch had 16, junior opposite side hitter
Adna Mehmedovic had 14 and senior outside
Tatum Stall had 12. Sophomore setter
Leah Wilton-LaBoy had a season-best 33 assists, while junior setter
Beatriz Rodrigues added 21.
Defensively, Stall led the Aggies with nine digs, while both Mehmedovic and graduate senior middle blocker
Kennedi Boyd led USU with four blocks apiece.
A 3-0 Aggie start, bookended by Boyd kills, gave USU the early lead in set one. The teams traded points until a 4-0 Utah State spurt, highlighted by a service ace from freshman libero
Kambree Rodriguez and kills from graduate senior opposite
Jill Schneggenburger and Capllonch, gave USU a 17-13 advantage. After the Cowgirls trimmed the lead to two, a 4-1 USU run, capped by a block by senior middle blocker
Kelsey Watson and Schneggenburger, put Utah State at set point 24-19. Wyoming scored twice more before a Cowgirl service error gave USU the 25-21 win.
Wyoming tied things up with a 25-22 set two win.
After the Cowgirls scored the opening point, the Aggies never trailed again in set three. A pair of 3-0 runs, highlighted by kills from Capllonch, Boyd and Stall, would give USU the 10-5 and then 16-8 leads. Wyoming trimmed the lead to two before another 3-0 Utah State run, bookended by kills from Capllonch and Mehmedovic, extended the lead to 23-18. A Stall hammer gave USU set point before another Mehmedovic kill clinched the 25-21 victory.
USU took an early 3-0 lead in set four before a 4-0 Wyoming run gave the Cowgirls the one-point edge. The Aggies responded with a 7-2 spurt, highlighted by a Capllonch ace, pair of Mehmedovic kills and a block by Mehmedovic and Watson, for the 10-6 advantage. A 7-1 USU run, featuring kills from Capllonch, Mehmedovic and Stall, along with a Boyd and Mehmedovic block, gave Utah State match point 24-12. The Cowgirls scored the next three points before a Mehmedovic hammer secured the 25-15 win.
Overall, USU hit .331 (61-18-130), while Wyoming hit .273 (57-21-132).
Utah State next hosts Air Force (14-9, 6-6 MW) on Thursday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m., inside the Wayne Estes Center.
