ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — Utah State soccer (7-6-1, 4-1 MW) continued its winning streak Thursday evening at the UNM Soccer Complex, earning its fourth-straight victory with a 2-0 decision over New Mexico.
The Aggies got off to a strong start, when just four minutes in, senior midfielder
Alex Day sailed a pass 50 yards downfield to
Tess Werts. The sophomore defender then worked the ball to the endline before tapping it back to sophomore midfielder
Kaylie Chambers in the middle of the box. With the New Mexico keeper off her line, Chambers beat out a pair of Lobo defenders for her second goal of the season and the fifth of her career.
After entering the game with one assist on the year, Werts was once again the facilitator in USU's second goal when she shook a pair of defenders near the corner before finding senior defender
Alysia Butters unmarked. Butters fired a perfectly-placed arching shot from 30 yards out over the diving fingertips of the New Mexico keeper for an impressive goal to make it 2-0, the second score of her career.
Despite being out-shot 14-10 in the contest, Utah State earned its fourth shutout of the season behind a five save performance by graduate keeper
Diera Walton, who played all 90 minutes in goal to earn the clean sheet. The Aggies have also now held 10-straight opponents to just one goal or fewer.
This is Utah State's first four-game Mountain West win streak since 2014, which now travels to the Golden State to take on San Diego State in a matchup between the top two teams in the conference standings.
USU and San Diego State face off on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m. The match will be streamed on Mountain West Network, with links to the live stream and stats available on utahstateaggies.com.
