SAN DIEGO, California — Utah State soccer (7-7-1, 4-2 MW) saw a four-game win streak come to an end Sunday afternoon as the Aggies suffered a 2-1 loss to San Diego State at the SDSU Sports Deck.
In a match which featured the top two teams in the Mountain West standings entering the afternoon, it was the Aztecs who came out on top to remain in first place with an unbeaten 5-0-1 record.
After a relatively quiet first half from each side, the Aggies wasted no time out of the locker room getting on the board. Just 24 seconds into the second half, senior defender
Alysia Butters found sophomore forward
Tess Werts with an inbound throw 25 yards out. Working her way into the box, Werts then fired off a right-footed shot which deflected off of an Aztec defender before finding the back of the net. This was the second goal of the year for Werts, who recorded a pair of assists in USU's win over New Mexico on Thursday.
With a 1-0 advantage in hand, the Aggies led San Diego State for the first time since 2016 but the lead didn't last for long. In the 63rd minute, the Aztecs equalized with a goal from Emma Gaines-Ramos. They then jumped on top just eight minutes later when a 71st minute shot by Denise Castro was deflected by Aggie graduate keeper
Diera Walton before making its way between the posts.
In the match, USU held a slight advantage in both shots (13-12) and shots on goal (6-5). Along with scoring the team's lone goal of the match, Werts led the Aggies with a career-high five shots, four of which were on frame.
This was just the third time this season USU has allowed more than one goal to an opponent, and was the first time it has lost when scoring. Walton played all 90 minutes in net for the Aggies, recording three saves on five shots faced.
Utah State now returns to Logan for a four-match homestand at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field. The Aggies first face Fresno State on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 3 p.m. The match will be streamed on Mountain West Network, with links to the live stream and stats available on utahstateaggies.com.
