KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Utah State women's basketball earned a dramatic win Tuesday evening at the Swinney Center, defeating Kansas City 62-60 on a last-second layup at the buzzer by junior guard
Cheyenne Stubbs.
This victory marks the first of the season for the Aggies, who were led by a 19-point, three-rebound, three-assist effort from Stubbs. She was one of a trio of USU players who reached double-figures in the scoring column, joined by junior guards
Ivory Finley (17) and
Skye Miller (10).
The Aggies got off to a strong start in the contest, shooting an efficient 60.0 percent (6-of-10) from the floor in the first 10 minutes to take a 16-14 after the first quarter. USU ratcheted up its defense in the second quarter, holding the Roos to just one make in their first 12 shots of the quarter, but a late run by Kansas City put the hosts back in front by the end of the half with a 33-30 advantage. Junior guard/forward
Samiana Suguturaga provided a big spark for the team early, totaling seven points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal in the first half.
After USU opened up a seven-point lead early in the final quarter, the Roos countered with an 11-2 run to move back in front with under two minutes to go. From there, back-to-back layups by Miller and Stubbs gave Utah State a 60-59 lead with just 31 seconds left to play. Kansas City took a timeout with 24 seconds on the clock, but were unable to get the ball back into play as an errant pass on the baseline inbound gave possession back to the Aggies.
With the ball in front of its bench, Utah State was also unable to get the ball into play, but a 1-for-1 trip to the free throw line on the other end gave USU the ball back with 22.8 seconds remaining and a tie game at 60-apiece. With the shot clock turned off, Stubbs ran the game clock down under five seconds before driving into the paint for a contested layup to secure the win.
The Aggie defense came up big, forcing 23 turnovers while limiting the Roos to just 37.5 percent (21-of-56) shooting from the floor and 27.8 percent (5-of-18) shooting from 3-point range in the contest.
Utah State finished the game shooting 46.2 percent (24-of-52) from the field, 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from the 3-point range and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the free throw line.
