LOGAN, Utah — Utah State women's basketball picked up its second-straight win Friday evening, taking down Weber State 72-62 inside of the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
In a wire-to-wire victory in which the Aggies never trailed, USU used lights out shooting to secure the victory as the team shot 58.1 percent (25-of-43) from the field on the night. This was the sixth-best shooting performance in program history, and the team's best in nearly a decade (12/19/14 at Sacramento State).
"I'm proud of our first quarter. That was fun and what we're capable of doing, then I thought we might have gotten a little bit cocky after coming out like that. I would prefer we don't do that, but it's really good for us," said Utah State head coach
Kayla Ard. "Credit to Weber, they didn't hang their heads and give up. They fought and came back, and that's great for us, because when we go on the road that's going to happen and even here at home that's going to happen. I'm really proud of our kids."
The Aggies came out of the gates hot, opening the contest on a 9-0 run, sparked by strong shooting by junior guard
Ivory Finley who scored eight of the team's first 14 points. USU dominated the first quarter to the tune of 26-11. The team also found its rhythm from deep, hitting four of its seven 3-pointers in the first frame, including a pair by Finley.
After Utah State opened up a lead of as many as 18 points early in the second quarter, the Wildcats fought back to close the gap to just three, but a late Aggie surge made the USU lead 42-35 at the halftime break. While much of the second half was played within a couple of possessions, the Aggies never relented, remaining on top until the final buzzer.
For the third-straight contest, it was junior guard
Cheyenne Stubbs leading the Aggies in the scoring column. She followed a 19-point performance in the team's win over Kansas City on Tuesday with an 18-point performance tonight. She also finished with four rebounds, a pair of assists and four steals. Stubbs was joined in double-figures by junior guards
Skye Miller and
Ivory Finley, who went for 14 and 10 points, respectively, while six different USU players finished with at least five points.
USU knocked down eight of its 18 attempted 3-point attempts (44.4 percent) in the contest, the team's most made triples since Jan. 5, 2023, against Colorado State.
Defensively, Utah State forced 18 turnovers while holding the Wildcats to just 36.4 percent (20-of-55) shooting from the floor and 27.6 percent (8-of-29) shooting from 3-point range. The Aggies won the battle on the glass 29-27, led by a seven-board effort by Miller, who was also the team's top facilitator with five assists.
Weber State was paced by Kendra Parra, who finished the night with 22 points.
