RENO, Nev. – Utah State volleyball (24-5, 17-1 MW) will head into the upcoming Mountain West Championships on a 14-match winning streak, the fourth-longest in school history, after sweeping Nevada (7-22, 3-15 MW) on the road on Saturday. Utah State's 24 wins are tied for the seventh-most in school history.
Senior middle blocker
Kelsey Watson became the first Aggie to ever hit 100 percent while logging at least 10 kills. She now holds the school hitting percentage record for between 10-14 attempts as she was a perfect 10-for-10.
Three more Aggies finished with double-digit kills as graduate senior
Shelby Capllonch had 12, senior outside hitter
Tatum Stall had 11 and junior opposite side hitter
Adna Mehmedovic had 11. Sophomore setter
Leah Wilton-LaBoy had 24 assists, while junior setter
Beatriz Rodrigues had 16.
Defensively, graduate middle blocker
Kennedi Boyd led USU with three blocks, while a trio of Aggies logged nine digs apiece in Stall, Rodrigues and freshman libero
Kambree Rodriguez.
After some back and forth to open the first set, an 8-0 Aggie run gave USU the 16-6 lead. After the Wolf Pack scored a pair of points, a 6-1 Aggie run, bookended by kills from Rodrigues and Mehmedovivc, extended the lead to 22-9. Mehmedovic then put Utah State at set point with a kill, followed immediately by a Stall hammer for the 25-12 victory.
The teams again stayed close to open the second set before a 7-1 USU run, highlighted by kills from Capllonch and Mehmedovic, a Boyd and Mehmedovic block and Capllonch service ace, put the Aggies on top 16-9. After a quick back and forth, Utah State closed out the set with five-straight kills from Stall, Capllonch and Watson for another 25-12 win.
A 4-0 run in set four, bookended by kills from Capllonch and Boyd, gave the Aggies the 13-7 advantage. The Wolf Pack got as close as 19-18, but Utah State responded by scoring the next six points for the 25-18 victory to secure the sweep. The final run was highlighted by a pair of Stall service aces, along with kills from Watson and Capllonch.
Utah State will next compete in the semifinals of the MW Championship in Las Vegas, Nev., on Thursday, Nov. 23. The bracket for the tournament will be set following the results of tonight's matches.
