LOGAN, Utah – Utah State sophomore safety
Ike Larsen was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced on Monday.
In Utah State's 32-24 double-overtime win at San Diego State last weekend, Larsen had eight tackles, which included 1.0 tackles for loss, to go along with the game-ending play as he intercepted a pass on fourth down in the second overtime and returned it 62 yards before being pushed out of bounds. Larsen also had a solo tackle two plays earlier that gained just one yard for the Aztecs.
Larsen also made a pair of plays on San Diego State fakes during the game. First, SDSU attempted a fake field goal in the second quarter, but Larsen disrupted the play which resulted in a 2-yard loss. And in the fourth quarter, the Aztecs attempted a fake punt that Larsen recorded a solo tackle on, negating a first down.
Larsen, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound native of Smithfield, Utah, is the only defender to earn player of the week honors twice in the MW this season.
Utah State (4-5, 2-3 MW) continues Mountain West action this weekend as it hosts Nevada (2-7, 2-3 MW) on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on KJZZ (Xfinity Ch. 3/657HD, DirecTV Ch. 14, DISH Ch. 14) and streamed on the Mountain West Network.
