MORAGA/SAN JOSE, Calif. – Utah State softball split a pair of road games on Saturday, losing 2-0 at Saint Mary's before rebounding to win 5-2 at San José State.
In USU's first game of the day, freshman
Tess Bumiller pitched six full innings, allowing only two unearned runs on five hits. Bumiller struck out five batters to set a new career-high. The Aggie offense, however, was stifled by SMC pitcher Odhi Vasquez who came on in relief to pitch seven innings. Utah State earned three hits and four walks at the plate but were unable to convert its baserunners to runs in the 2-0 loss.
The Aggies rebounded in their second game of the day to defeat Mountain West-foe SJSU in a non-conference showdown. A five-run fifth inning powered USU to the victory. Sophomore designated player
Giselle Gonzalez and sophomore shortstop
Ariel Fifita each notched RBI singles while sophomore second baseman
Claudia Medina and senior catcher
Makenzie Macfarlane each hit doubles, plating one and two runs, respectively.
The lead proved insurmountable as the combination of sophomore
Mia Reynolds, senior
Alyssa Millemon and freshman
Hailey McLean combined to hold the Spartans to two runs on six hits. Millemon earned the victory while McLean notched her first career save and the first for the Aggies this season.
