Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

LOGAN, Utah — Utah State men's tennis won for the second day in a row, defeating Grand Canyon, 6-1, at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club.

The Aggies began the day by taking the doubles point as seniors David Cierny and Bodin Zarkovic swiftly won at the No. 1 spot, 6-1. On court two senior Javier Ruiz and freshman Nuno Pinheiro outplayed their opponents to secure the doubles point leaving seniors Jack Ninteman and Roko Savin's match unfinished.

Momentum carried onto courts one and two as Cierny and Zarkovic won in consecutive sets. Cierny posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at the top spot while Zarkovic won 6-3, 6-3 at the second position.

After the Lopes' scored their lone point at the third position, a dogfight erupted on court four as Savin came back from a 5-2 deficit to take the set into a tiebreak, defeating Grand Canyon's David Wekesa, 7-6. Savin then swept the next set 6-0 to clinch the win for the second day in a row.

At the No. 5 spot, Pinheiro's match intensified as he took his opponent into a first-set tiebreak, outscoring GCU's William Alsterback 7-6 (7-2) and riding the momentum through his next set as he scored 6-3 to earn the fifth point of the match.

All eyes were on Ruiz as the final Aggie left playing. He took the first set, 6-2. Ruiz' opponent went up early in the second set before Ruiz rallied to be the third Aggie to win a tiebreak, giving the final point to Utah State.

Utah State hits the road on Wednesday, Feb. 8, to take on the University of Utah in Salt Lake City at 5 pm (MT) before coming back home to face in-state rival BYU on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 12 pm (MT) at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club.
