LA JOLLA, Calif. – Utah State's golf team enters the final day of the UCSD Invitational in seventh place after carding a 13-under 563 (284-279) during the first two rounds on Monday at the pristine Torrey Pines.
The 13-under 563 the Aggies shot on the 7,258-yard North Course is tied for second all-time in program history for a team 36-hole low round. During the second round of the tournament, Utah State fired a 9-under 279, which is tied for 10th in school history for a team 18-hole low round.
Junior
John Cook and sophomore
Esteban Jaramillo led the Aggies on Day 1 of the invite as they were tied for 15th at 5-under 139.
Cook carded a season-best 5-under 67 in the second round. Jaramillo shot a 2-under 70 in the first round and a 3-under 69 in the second round. He now his 12 par-or-better rounds on the season, which is tied for 10th all-time in school history, and seven under-par rounds – three shy of cracking the top-10 list.
Junior
Josh Pehrson and sophomore
Luis Gerardo Cantu were tied for 31st at 1-under 143 following Monday's action, while sophomore
Julio Arronte Sanchez was tied for 57th at 2-over 146.
Gerardo Cantu carded a 2-under 70 in the first round to match his career-best low round.
Oklahoma Christian, which is ranked No. 3 in the country at the Division II-level, was in first place at 20-under 556 (280-276) following Monday's opening day. Seattle University was in second (557, -19) and CSUN was in third (559, -17). Utah Tech (561, -15) and California Baptist (561, -15) rounded out the top five.
CSUN's Eirik Thomassen was the clubhouse leader following the first day of the tournament at 13-under 131 (68-63).
The third and final round of the tournament will take place today on the North Course at Torrey Pines.
