LA JOLLA, Calif. – Utah State's golf team saw three of its four scorers shoot even par or better in the final round of the UC San Diego Invitational as the Aggies set the program's 54-hole record with a score of 847 to tie for fourth Tuesday at the picturesque Torrey Pines.
Utah State's 54-hole total of 847 (-17) on Torrey Pines' 7,258-yard North Course bested the old mark of 848 (-16), first set during the 2017-18 season at the CSUN-hosted Bill Cullum Invitational (Wood Ranch Golf Club) and matched in 2019-20 at the Colorado-hosted Mark Simpson Invitational (Colorado National Golf Club).
"The team played extremely well these past two days," Utah State head coach
Dean Johansen said. "It was impressive to see what they accomplished, especially when you consider we really haven't seen grass for the past six months or so."
The 13-under 563 the Aggies shot in the first two rounds of the tournament is tied for second all-time in program history for 36 holes. During the second round of the tournament, Utah State fired a 9-under 279, which is tied for 10th in school history for 18-holes.
The Aggies led the field of 15 teams with four eagles.
Oklahoma Christian, which is ranked No. 3 in the country at the Division II-level, won the tournament at 32-under 832, two strokes better than second-place Seattle University (834, -30). CSUN finished in third (839, -8), while UC Santa Barbara tied with Utah State in fourth.
Esteban Jaramillo paced the Aggies, firing an even-par 72 in the final round to finish tied for 14th overall with a 5-under par, three-round total of 211. The sophomore's 54-hole total tied his career best, previously set last fall at the Air Force-hosted Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational.
Jaramillo, who had one eagle and nine birdies over the three rounds, now has 13 par-or-better rounds on the season, which is tied for ninth all-time in school history.
Juniors
John Cook and
Josh Pehrson tied for 19th at 4-under 212. Pehrson, who had two eagles, led the Aggies in the final round with a 3-under 69, while Cook, who had an eagle of his own, matched his best-ever tournament finish.
Julio Arronte Sanchez shot a career-best-tying 2-under 70 in the final round as the sophomore finished tied for 37th at even-par 216. Fellow sophomore
Luis Gerardo Cantu tied for 65th with a three-round total of 5-over 221.
CSUN's Eirik Thomassen took home medalist honors as he shot a 7-under 65 in the final round to finish at 20-under 196.
