SAN JOSE, California - Utah State softball (18-26, 9-13 Mountain West) concluded its 2023 season with a 7-2 extra-inning victory against San José State (23-26, 11-11 MW) on Saturday.
The Aggies came out hot as an RBI double from freshman designated player Grace Matej in the top of the first gave Utah State a 1-0 edge. USU maintained its lead until SJSU scored a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth.
Both teams scored a run in the sixth inning to tie at 2-apiece. Freshman right fielder Kya Pratt brought home Utah State's second run of the day with an RBI single up the middle.
The game stayed knotted at 2-all through the next two innings, but the Aggies were ready to put the game to bed in the ninth. USU quickly loaded the bases with no outs and a sacrifice fly from sophomore second baseman Giselle Gonzalez gave Utah State a 3-2 advantage.
With the bases loaded yet again, senior center fielder Tyler Thornton scored a pair of Aggies with a two-RBI double through the right side. Sophomore third baseman Claire Raley brought home the final two Aggie runs of the day after she tripled to right center as Utah State held on for the 7-2 victory.
A pair of Aggie freshmen saw time in the circle on Saturday in Hailey McLean and Tess Bumiller. Bumiller earned her seventh win of the season after allowing no hits and no runs in her 3.2 innings of work.
