Utah State Basketball Signs Ian Martinez to 2023-24 Roster

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State head men's basketball coach Danny Sprinkle announced the signing of Ian Martinez to the 2023-24 roster.
 
Martinez, a 6-foot-3 guard, joins the Aggies after spending two seasons at Maryland and one season at Utah. For his career, Martinez has appeared in 88 career games, averaging 4.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game, while shooting 43.1 percent (140-of-325) from the field, 34.9 percent (44-of-126) from deep and 78.9 percent (82-of-104) at the free throw line.
 
The native of Heredia, Costa Rica, has scored in double figures 14 times in his career, including a career-best 18 points with Utah against USC in the Pac-12 Tournament (March 3, 2021). Martinez has logged at least five rebounds in 10 career games, while recording multiple assists, steals and blocks in 16, seven and six games, respectively. He had a career-best five steals with Maryland against Niagara (Nov. 7, 2022).
 
In his two seasons with Maryland, Martinez appeared in 63 games, averaging 4.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game. He was one of the team's top reserves as a junior in 2022-23, playing in all 35 games while averaging 5.7 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. Martinez shot 40.3 percent (24-of-62) from behind the arc during the campaign. As a freshman at Utah in 2020-21, Martinez appeared in 24 games, averaging 9.7 points over the final six games of the season.
 
Martinez prepped at JSerra Catholic, where he was a four-star recruit according to Rivals and 247Sports. He was named all-CIF Southern Section (Division I), OC Register all-Orange County first team and first-team all-Trinity League after averaging 23.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.3 steals per game for the Lions. He helped guide his team to the CIF Southern Section semifinals and a CIF State Championship regional quarterfinal as a senior.
 
As a junior, Martinez led JSerra to a 22-8 overall record and a second-round appearance in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs. He garnered all-Orange County, all-CIF Division I and all-Trinity League first-team honors in his first year at JSerra. He played his sophomore season at Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary, where he guided the Cardinals to a 20-10 overall record and a second-round appearance in the CIF-SS Division I playoffs.
