LOGAN, Utah – Utah State volleyball fans were able to take an early look at the 2023 squad as the Aggies defeated Idaho State in straight sets in their Friday night exhibition at home.
USU hit .398 (49-10-98) overall, while holding ISU to a .141 (27-14-92) mark. Graduate outside hitters
Shelby Capllonch and
Jill Schneggenburger led the way for the Aggies with 17 and 10 kills, respectively. Both Utah State setters had double-digit assists as junior
Beatriz Rodrigues finished with 24 and sophomore
Leah Wilton-LaBoy had 15.
Defensively, senior libero
Jordi Holdaway logged a match-high 10 digs. Three Aggies had their eyes on a double-double as Schneggenburger had nine digs, Rodrigues had eight and Wilton-LaBoy finished with seven. Junior opposite side hitter
Katie Swensen and senior middle blocker
Kelsey Watson led Utah State with three blocks each.
USU never trailed in the first set and ISU's only lead in the second was the opening point as the Aggies won 25-13 and 25-17, respectively. The third set was much closer as the teams were tied at 19-apiece, until Utah State rallied with a 6-0 run, capped by back-to-back service aces from Schneggenburger, to clinch the match.
The reigning Mountain West Tournament champions will open the 2023 season at a tournament in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Aggies first face host Nebraska, which made it to the regional semifinals in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, on Friday, Aug. 25, before facing SMU on Saturday, Aug. 26, and Lipscomb on Sunday, Aug. 27. The Huskers finished the 2022 campaign ranked ninth in the nation.
