LINCOLN, Neb. – Utah State volleyball (2-1) will head into its three-game homestand on a two-match winning streak after recording a 3-1 victory over Lipscomb (0-3) on Sunday.
Graduate outside hitter
Jill Schneggenburger led USU with 14 kills, while eying a double-double after finishing with nine digs. Fellow graduate outside hitter
Shelby Capllonch also had a near double-double recording 13 kills and eight digs in the match. Sophomore setter
Leah Wilton-LaBoy finished with a match-high 18 assists, followed closely by junior setter
Beatriz Rodrigues with 16.
Defensively, freshman libero
Kambree Rodriguez led Utah State with a match-high-tying 13 digs. Sophomore middle blocker
Bella Wooden led the team with a career-best eight blocks, while junior opposite side hitter
Adna Mehmedovic recorded a career-high seven.
Utah State opened the first set with three-straight points before Lipscomb went on a run of its own to tie it. The teams stayed close until a 7-0 Aggie run, highlighted by kills from Wooden and Capllonch, along with a Wooden and Mehmedovic block, gave the Aggies a 16-8 advantage. Utah State maintained the distance as a Capllonch kill secured the 25-16 set one victory.
The Bison turned around to win the second 25-19.
After Lipscomb earned the first point of set three, Utah State came out hot with a 6-0 run to take the lead. The teams then went back and forth until an 8-1 Aggie run, featuring a Wilton-LaBoy service ace and kills from Wooden, Mehmedovic, Capllonch and Schneggenburger, gave USU the 20-8 advantage. The Bison slowly chipped away at the lead, but a hammer from sophomore opposite side hitter
Kaylie Ray secured the 25-19 win for the Aggies.
It stayed close through the opening minutes of the fourth set until a 6-0 Aggie run, capped by another Mehmedovic and Wooden block, put Utah State on top 15-7. Lipscomb answered right back with a 6-0 run of its own to close the gap. The back and forth continued until a 3-0 Bison run cut the Aggie edge to 21-20. The teams traded the next few points, but yet another Mehmedovic and Wooden block put USU at match point and a Schneggenburger kill clinched the 25-22 victory.
Overall, USU hit .164 (51-29-134), while Lipscomb hit .085 (35-25-117).
Capllonch and graduate middle blocker
Kennedi Boyd earned all-tournament honors for their performances at the No. 5 Nebraska-hosted Ameritas Players Challenge.
Utah State opens its home campaign by hosting Utah (1-1) on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 6 p.m.
