LOGAN, Utah – Utah State junior long snapper
Jacob Garcia has been named to the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy Preseason Watch List, it was announced Thursday.
Named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy honors college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society and inspire greater service in the world.
Garcia is one of six players from the Mountain West on the 108-player list.
The native of Anaheim, California, has served as the Aggies' long snapper since the 2021 campaign, appearing in 27 games overall. He recorded his first-career tackle in Utah State's 17-13 win at Colorado State last season.
Garcia was also nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and is a preseason first-team all-MW selection by Phil Steele.
The two-time academic all-MW recipient spends countless hours working with various groups/organizations on campus and in the community.
Semifinalists for the Wuerffel Trophy will be announced on Nov. 2, and finalists will be announced on Nov. 28. The formal announcement of the recipient is scheduled to be made during The Home Depot College Football Awards show on Dec. 7 or 8. The presentation of the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy will occur on Feb. 17, 2024, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
Utah State opens the 2023 season at Iowa on Saturday, Sept. 2, while its home opener is the following weekend against Idaho State on Saturday, Sept. 9. USU begins Mountain West play at Air Force on Saturday, Sept. 16.
