COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Utah State volleyball (5-2) lost 3-0 to Texas A&M (6-0) in a road match on Thursday night.
Junior opposite side hitter Adna Mehmedovic led the USU Aggies with eight kills, while both junior setter Beatriz Rodrigues and sophomore setter Leah Wilton-LaBoy logged 12 assists each.
Defensively, Rodrigues led Utah State with eight digs, while Mehmedovic led with four blocks.
After a kill from graduate outside hitter Shelby Capllonch gave USU a 3-2 edge in set one, Texas A&M quickly turned around with an 8-1 run for the 10-4 lead. The College Station Aggies led the remainder of the set as Texas A&M won 25-14.
Set two was looking similar to set one as Texas A&M held a 20-8 lead. However, Utah State started to chip away at the margin and a 4-0 spurt, highlighted by a kill from graduate middle blocker Kennedi Boyd and a service ace from senior defensive specialist Jordi Holdaway, cut the deficit to 23-18. Texas A&M then scored two of the next three points for the 25-19 victory.
Utah State rolled its late set two momentum into the third as a kill from graduate opposite Jill Schneggenburger gave USU a 5-3 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Wilton-LaBoy and Capllonch would later give the Logan Aggies an 8-6 edge. Texas A&M tied the set at 13-apiece, but USU scored the next three points for the 16-13 edge.
A 4-0 Texas A&M run gave the College Station Aggies their first lead of the set at 17-16. The set continued to stay close as the teams were knotted at 21-each, but Texas A&M secured the match victory with a 25-22 win.
Overall, USU hit .040 (31-27-101), while Texas A&M hit .256 (32-12-78).
Utah State next takes on TCU (2-4) on Friday, Sept. 8, at 1:30 p.m. (MT).
