COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Utah State volleyball (5-3) lost 3-0 to TCU (3-4) on Friday.
Graduate outside hitter Shelby Capllonch led USU with eight kills. Both Aggie setters logged 13 assists each in junior Beatriz Rodrigues and sophomore Leah Wilton-LaBoy.
Defensively, Utah State was led by freshman libero Kambree Rodriguez with 10 digs and graduate middle blocker Kennedi Boyd with five blocks.
After being tied at 4-each in set one, a 7-0 Horned Frog run gave TCU an 11-4 advantage. The Aggies were unable to overcome the deficit as the Horned Frogs won 25-15.
TCU started off the second set with an early 6-1 lead. The Horned Frogs maintained the margin until an 8-0 Aggie spurt, highlighted by a block from junior opposite side hitter Adna Mehmedovic and sophomore middle blocker Bella Wooden, along with kills from Mehmedovic, Wooden and graduate outside Jill Schneggenburger, gave USU the 17-14 edge. Another Schneggenburger hammer gave USU the 19-16 lead, but TCU closed out the set with a 9-0 run for the 25-19 win.
A 5-1 Aggie run in set three gave Utah State the 14-11 edge. A 4-0 Horned Frog spurt would later give TCU a 17-16 edge, but back-to-back USU points put the Aggies back on top 18-17. The set stayed close until a Boyd kill followed by a Boyd and Capllonch block gave Utah State set point at 24-22. TCU responded with three-straight points to take match point 25-24. Sophomore opposite Kaylie Ray then knotted the score with a kill, but TCU would go on to win 27-25.
Overall, USU hit .094 (36-24-128), while TCU hit .182 (38-18-110).
Utah State next takes on UNI (4-3) on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 10 a.m. (MT).
