NOTES - Utah State Plays First MW Home Games This Week vs Wyoming and San José State

Aggie Tip-Off

Utah State women's basketball (3-9, 0-1 MW) is set for its first home action of Mountain West play this week as the Aggies host Wyoming (6-6, 1-0 MW) on Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 6 p.m. (MT), followed by a contest against San José State on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 1 p.m. inside of the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

Scouting the Cowgirls

• Wyoming is off to a 6-6 start to the 2023-24 campaign and a 1-0 start to league play after earning a 61-47 win over Boise State on Saturday. 

• Junior center Allyson Fertig leads the team in both scoring and rebounding this year with 13.7 points and 7.3 boards per game. Junior guard Emily Mellema averages a team-best 2.8 assists per contest.

• The Cowgirls average 64.0 points while allowing 61.9 points per outing. 

Scouting the Spartans

• San José State is off to a 5-7 start to the 2023-24 campaign. Before traveling to Logan, it will open league play versus Fresno State on Jan. 3. 

• Freshman guard Jyah LoVett leads the team in both scoring and assists this year with 12.8 points and 3.2 boards per game. Junior forward/center Amhyia Moreland averages a team-best 6.3 rebounds per contest.

• The Spartans average 62.8 points while allowing 59.7 points per outing. 

Last Time Out

• Utah State opened Mountain West play with a loss Saturday afternoon, falling to UNLV 68-107 in Las Vegas.

• The Aggies were sparked by a huge effort from junior guard Cheyenne Stubbs, who went off for a career-high 30 points in the contest while also leading the Aggies in rebounds (6), assists (4) and steals (2). Junior guard Macy Smith also reached double-figures for the second-straight game, finishing with 10 points while also chipping in three rebounds.

• The Lady Rebels were sparked by center Desi-Rae Young, who went for game-highs of 31 points and nine rebounds to go along with four assists, a block and a steal.

Series History

• Utah State and Wyoming have met up 41 times in a series dating back to 1971.

• Wyoming leads the all-time series 30-11 and has won 11 of the past 12 meetings. Utah State's last win in the series came in 2022 in Logan.

• Last year, the Cowgirls swept the series, winning 64-52 in Logan and 70-48 in Laramie. 

• Utah State and San José State have met up 35 times in a series dating back to 1980.

• Utah State leads the all-time series 19-16, but SJSU has won six of the past seven meetings.

• Last year, the Spartans swept the series, winning 77-59 in San Jose and 77-59 in Logan.

30-Point Club

Cheyenne Stubbs went off in Utah State's game at UNLV, finishing with a career-high 30 points in the contest on 7-of-15 shooting (.467) from the floor, 5-of-9 shooting (.556) from 3-point range and 11-of-14 shooting (.786) from the charity stripe.

• She is just the 19th player in USU program history to score 30 or more points in a game, and is the first to do so since Adryana Quezada on Jan. 9, 2022. 

• She is also just the 13th player in program history to make five 3-pointers in a game. 

Catching On

• Utah State junior guard Macy Smith has found her rhythm in recent games. After missing a few games and playing limited minutes due to injury early this season, the CSUN transfer has now scored 10-plus points in back-to-back games.

• In the past two contests, Smith is averaging 11.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals while playing 33.5 minutes per game. 

Chey's On Fire

Cheyenne Stubbs is Utah State's top scorer this year and has emerged as one of the league's top offensive threats.

• The 5-foot-5 junior enters the week averaging a team-best 15.9 points per contest, third-most in the Mountain West. She also leads the team in assists (2.4) and steals (1.9) per game, while bringing down 4.2 rebounds per contest.

• Stubbs has scored in double-figures in 10 of 12 games this year, while scoring 20-plus on three occasions.

Spreading the Wealth

All 15 rostered players for Utah State have made appearances in games this season, while eight different players have appeared in three different starting lineups. Additionally, nine players average at least 10 minutes per game, while 14 of the 15 average at least five.

In the Paint

• Utah State has out-scored eight of its 12 opponents this year in the paint, including in each of the team's three wins. 

• The Aggies scored a season-high 44 points in the paint in the season opener at CSUN. 

Skye's the Limit

• Junior guard Skye Miller has proven to be a versatile player for Utah State, and one of the team's most consistent offensive threats. She has scored in double-figures in eight of 12 games this season, including a career-high 17 points against Warner Pacific. She has also recorded five-plus rebounds six times and three-plus assists six times.

• Miller also averages a team-high 4.8 rebounds while ranking second on the squad with 2.3 assists per contest.

Up Next

Following this week's games, the Aggies hit the road for a pair of road contests next week. Utah State will first head to Albuquerque to take on New Mexico on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m. It will then head to the Fresno, California, to take on Fresno State on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m.
