DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – Facing the team's highest-ranked opponent since 2019, Utah State women's basketball fell to No. 11 Ohio State, 87-51, on Friday at the Ocean Center as part of the Daytona Beach Classic.
The Aggies held tough through the first quarter of play. Playing against an opponent with a similar style to their own, Utah State fought to only a seven-point deficit early in the second quarter at 22-15 before the Buckeyes showcased their ability with a 20-0 run spanning just over six minutes of play. OSU entered halftime with a 45-18 lead.
Utah State kept fighting for the entirety of the game, outshooting OSU from behind the arc in the second half as Utah State shot 7-of-11 from 3 to Ohio State's 1-of-4 mark after intermission. After the Buckeyes grew the lead to 58-23, the Aggies sparked a 12-2 run featuring a pair of baskets from freshman guard/forward
Taliyah Logwood and a layup from junior forward/center
Sophie Sene before freshman guard
Carlie Latta and junior guard
Mia Tarver both drained 3-pointers to bring USU back within 25. The Buckeyes proved too much to allow the Aggies further back in the contest, however, before the final buzzer.
Tarver led the Aggies with 12 points while shooting 4-of-7 from 3-point territory plus three rebounds and two steals. Logwood finished second on the team with 11 points off 5-of-7 shooting, also adding three rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. Latta also had a good shooting day from the outside, finishing with nine points while going 3-of-4 from deep and adding two steals. Sene led USU with seven rebounds while scoring six points on a perfect 3-of-3 night from the field.
USU shot 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from 3-point range for the full game, and 33.3 percent (18-of-54) overall. The Aggies were also a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Utah State held Ohio State to a 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) showing from behind the arc and outscored the Buckeyes in bench points, 27-25.
