ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Utah State volleyball saw its four-match winning streak snapped on Saturday with a 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 18-25, 26-24, 15-11) loss to New Mexico at the Johnson Center.
Set One
USU came out swinging in the first set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. The Lobos would responded with an 8-3 stretch of their own to tie the set back up at 12-12. The Aggies laid claim midway through the set with an 11-3 burst en route to winning the opening frame, 25-18. Utah State hit .294 in the opening set and held the Lobos to a .056 hitting percentage.
Set Two
The Aggies also opened set two with momentum, building a 6-3 lead at the start. An 8-2 stretch from New Mexico, however, turned the tide to the home side. Utah State answered with a 3-0 run to tie the set at 11-11 but could not wrestle the lead back from the Lobos as New Mexico tied the match with the 25-20 win.
Set Three
Utah State again jumped out to an early lead in set three, this time building an 8-5 lead to begin the frame. This time, however, the Aggies maintained control throughout and never trailed. After building a five-point lead at 17-12 following a pair of kills each from junior
Tierney Barlow and freshman
Loryn Helgesen, the Lobos cut the lead to a single point. The Aggies then closed the set on a 6-1 run to win, 25-18. The run saw both senior
Adna Mehmedovic and freshman
Andrea Simovski record a pair of kills, while graduate senior
Kelsey Watson added a solo block during the burst. Sophomore
Kendel Thompson finished out the set victory with a service ace.
Set Four
USU looked to close out the match in the fourth set, using an 8-1 blitz to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 10-5 lead. New Mexico answered with a 6-1 run to tie the match before each team recorded a 3-0 run. Tied at 15, Utah State claimed seven of the next nine points to go up 22-17. The Lobos again answered, however, closing the set on a 9-2 run to win, 26-24, and force a fifth set.
Fifth Set
For the first time in the match, New Mexico took the early lead in the set with a 9-4 start to the decisive frame. The Aggies battled back with a 6-3 stretch to trim the deficit to two points on two occasions before the Lobos ultimately closed out the win with a 15-11 victory in the fifth set.
Quick Notes
- With the loss, Utah State dropped to 9-5 in Mountain West play. Four of USU's five losses during the conference season have come in five sets.
- The Aggies hit .211 for the match, snapping their streak of seven straight matches of hitting .250 or better, the program's longest-such streak since joining the MW in 2013.
- Utah State had four players with double-digit kills for the first time this season. Mehmedovic led the Aggies with 15 kills while hitting .351, while Barlow finished close behind with 13 kills on a .346 hitting percentage. Helgesen added 11 kills and Watson added a season-high 10 kills on a .391 hitting percentage.
- Mehmedovic hit .333 or higher for the fifth-straight match. Over that period, Mehmedovic leads the Aggies with 61 kills while hitting .424 and recording only eight attack errors.
- The Aggies also had five players with double-digit digs, led by freshmen Jagoda Bialek and Kaylie Kofe who each set new career-highs with 18 digs each. Thompson added 12 digs while freshman Delaney Lawson and Simovski added 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
- Kofe finished with her eighth double-double of the season with 48 assists in addition to her 18 digs. Kofe has now had a double-double in three straight matches.
- Thompson posted a team-high four service aces, tying her career-high. It is her second time in the past four matches recording four aces. Simovski also added three aces from the service line.

The Aggies return to Cache Valley for its final two matches of the 2024 season. The Aggies will host UNLV on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m., before celebrating Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m.
