LOGAN, Utah – Utah State soccer had a program-record five players selected to the United Soccer Coaches All-Pacific Region teams, including four players earning a spot on the first team. This is the first time in program history that more than two Aggies have earned all-region honors in a season.
First-teamers include graduate midfielder
Alex Day, sophomore midfielder
Summer Diamond, and senior defenders
Kaitlyn Richins and
Addy Weichers. Junior forward
Tess Werts earned a spot on the second team.
Day, a native of Chino Hills, California, earned a spot on the first team after starting 23 games this season as a defensive midfielder for the Aggies. In over 1,800 minutes on the pitch, she totaled seven points on three goals and an assist. Day was responsible for game-winners against both Colorado College and Boise State. On the season, she took 25 shots, including seven on goal. Day was also named to the all-Mountain West first team.
Diamond, a native of Uintah, Utah, started 23 games this year and totaled over 1,500 minutes on the pitch. She had a balanced season with five goals and five assists to total 15 points. Diamond scored game-winning goals at Utah, at Weber State and at UNLV. She totaled 38 shots this season including 20 shots on goal, third-most on the team. Diamond also earned all-Mountain West second team honors.
Richins, a native of Layton, Utah, played a key role on the Aggie back line this season. Richins earned Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year and all-MW first team accolades after starting all 24 matches and playing over 2,000 minutes in the defensive backfield for USU. She scored two goals with an assist, one of those goals being the game-winner at Utah Valley.
Weichers, a native of Highland, Utah, anchored one of the top defenses in the nation as she started all 24 games and played a team-high 2,173 minutes for Utah State this season. With Weichers on the back line, USU allowed just 0.58 goals per game while recording a program-record 15 shutouts. Aggie opponents were also limited to just 7.8 shots and 3.1 shots on goal per contest. Along with her defensive contributions, Weichers also scored a goal and had two assists.
Werts, a native of Portland, Oregon, led USU in points, goals and assists this season. She tallied 25 points, second-most in the Mountain West, coming on eight goals and nine assists, which rank third and first in the MW, respectively. Werts scored game-winners at BYU and at Grand Canyon as she made 21 starts in 22 appearances. She led the team in both shots (49) and shots on goal (22). Werts was also named to the all-Mountain West first team this season.
