RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Utah State softball (3-3, 0-0 MW) split a pair of games on the first day of the Cal Baptist Classic Friday afternoon in Riverside, falling to CSU Bakersfield 3-2, then defeating in-state foe Weber State 3-2.
Against the Roadrunners, the Aggies earned the first run of the game as sophomore outfielder Kya Pratt made it home via sophomore infielder Alex Bunton's groundout RBI. Utah State's lead didn't last long as the Roadrunners hit a 2-run home run in the second inning. In the third inning, sophomore pitcher Tess Bumiller entered the game replacing sophomore Hailey McLean on the mound after CSU Bakersfield scored on a throwing error.
Neither team would score again, as Utah State out-hit the Roadrunners 5-4 in the contest but left 7 runners on base.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Aggies faced an early deficit as Weber State opened the contest with an RBI double to make it 1-0. A single to right field by McLean brought home sophomore outfielder Jaden Colunga to even things up until the next at bat where junior infielder Ariel Fifita hit a two-RBI single to make it 3-1 in the bottom of the second. In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats hit a double down the left field line to score a run, but the Aggies held strong to stave off the comeback.
Redshirt-sophomore Denay Smith pitched a complete game against the Wildcats, earning her second win of the season.

Utah State (3-3, 0-0 MW) continues competition in the Cal Baptist Classic tomorrow as the Aggies play another doubleheader, facing CSU Bakersfield at 1:30 p.m. (MT), then California Baptist at 6:30 p.m. (MT).
