SAN DIEGO, California – Utah State softball (15-11, 0-2 MW) fell in its second game of a three-game series at San Diego State Saturday afternoon, losing 14-0 in a five-inning contest.
The Aztecs applied pressure early and jumped out to a commanding lead with a four-run first inning. The hosts loaded the bases and scored a pair of runs before recording an out, forcing an early pitching change from Utah State. Mistakes were costly for the Aggies in the inning as SDSU scored four runs on just two hits.
The Aztecs tacked on two more runs in the second to make it 6-0, then used a big eight-run fourth inning to secure the five-inning win. In total, SDSU recorded 12 hits while Utah State had four. Each team finished with a single error. Four Aggies recorded one hit apiece in the contest.
On the mound, sophomore
Hailey McLean started the game and was credited with the loss. She was replaced in the first inning by graduate
Katie Zuniga, who went for 1.1 innings. Redshirt sophomore
Denay Smith took over in the second, then sophomores
Tess Bumiller and Sydney Saldaña split the final inning.
