Logan Hammer Named America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah — Utah State track & field sophomore Logan Hammer has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, March 31. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel. 

With its sponsorship of the Student-Athlete of the Week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships. 

Hammer, a native of Nampa, Idaho, won the men's pole vault invite at the Stanford Invitational by clearing 5.32 meters (17-5.5). Hammer bested his previous personal record of 5.30 meters (17-4.5) and still sits at third all-time in school history in the event. 

Utah State track & field returns to action on Friday and Saturday, April 5-6 at the University of Utah-hosted Utah Spring Classic in Salt Lake City.

Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included: 

GOLF – Freshman Enrique Karg (Guadalajara, Mexico) led Utah State at the UC San Diego Invitational last week as he tied for 18th at 3-over 219 (75-71-73), which is his best 54-hole score of the season and his second-best 54-hole finish. Furthermore, his second round 1-under 71 is tied for his lowest round of the season. USU tied for ninth-place in the 17-team field with a 20-over 884 (307-284-293). 

MEN'S TENNIS – Fifth-year senior Bodin Zarkovic (Belgrade, Serbia) posted a combined 3-1 record last week as Utah State went 1-1 in Mountain West play with a 4-3 loss at New Mexico and a 4-2 win at Air Force. Against the Lobos, Zarkovic lost in three sets at No. 1 singles (6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6) and teamed with junior Sergi Micó Fenollar for a 6-2 win at the second doubles position. And against the Falcons, he posted a straight sets win at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-4) and teamed with Fenollar for a 6-1 win at the second doubles position. 

WOMEN'S TENNIS – Fifth-year senior Zeynep Naz Ozturk (Istanbul, Turkey) posted a combined 2-1 record last week in helping Utah State to a 1-1 Mountain West home mark with a 4-1 win against Air Force and a 4-0 loss to New Mexico. Against the Falcons, Ozturk posted a straight sets win at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-1) and teamed with senior Laura Fernanda Eugenio De Hilario for a 6-4 win at the first doubles position. And against the Lobos, Ozturk and De Hilario lost at the first double position 6-3, while her singles match at the No. 1 spot was left unfinished (0-6, 6-3, 5-3). 

SOFTBALL – Sophomore catcher Grace Matej (Orangevale, California) led Utah State in its Mountain West series at UNLV last weekend as the Aggies lost all three games (L, 3-7; L, 13-14 (9); L, 3-12 (5)). Matej began the week by going 2-for-4 with a run scored in game one against the Rebels. She followed that by going 4-for-5 with two doubles and a home run, while recording seven RBIs and scoring a pair of runs in the second contest. In game three, Matej hit 1-for-2 and drew a walk, while scoring two runs. In total, Matej hit .636 (7-for-11) on the week with two doubles, a home run, seven RBIs and five runs scored. She also recorded 13 putouts. 

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD – Freshman Shelby Jensen (Saratoga Springs, Utah) now ranks second all-time in school history after she finished second in her section of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:11.58 at the Stanford Invitational.
