LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (21-22, 5-11 MW) fell in its final contest of a three-game series against Colorado State Sunday afternoon at Johnson Field, losing 14-3 in five innings.
After a run was scored by the Rams in the start of the first inning, Utah State quickly responded by putting two of its own on the board in the bottom. First, junior infielder
Giselle Gonzalez sent a single down the right field line to score sophomore catcher
Grace Matej from second. Then, sophomore outfielder
Jaden Colunga singled to center field for an RBI as sophomore infielder
Alex Bunton made her way home.
The Rams went on to score 13 runs unanswered, though, putting seven on the scoresheet in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth. Utah State's third and final run came in the bottom of the fourth, as a full count home run to center field by freshman outfielder
Tatum Silva made the score 14-3. In need of four runs to stay alive in the fifth, the Aggies got two runners aboard but both were left stranded.
Gonzalez was the only USU player with multiple hits as she went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of singles. As a team, Utah State had seven hits to CSU's 19.
In the circle, the Aggies cycled through five pitchers. Graduate
Katie Zuniga started and was awarded the loss. Sophomore
Tess Bumiller was the only USU pitcher to go for more than an inning, allowing no earned runs in the final 2.0 innings.
