W: GUEST, McKenna (9-19)
L: McLean, Hailey (1-5)
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Utah State softball (22-24, 5-13 MW) lost to New Mexico in part two of a three-game series Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque, falling 3-2.
The Aggies did all of their scoring in the first inning, putting two quick runs on the board courtesy of a single to right field from sophomore infielder
Alex Bunton which scored sophomore outfielder
Jaden Colunga and sophomore catcher
Grace Matej to take an early 2-0 lead.
That lead would hold until the fourth inning, when New Mexico put a couple of runs on the board to even things up. The Lobos then used an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to pull ahead before holding the Aggies hitless in the sixth and seventh innings.
In total, Utah State recorded four hits to New Mexico's hits. Matej was the lone Aggie to record multiple hits in the contest, going 2-for-3 at the plate. USU left five runners on base.
In the circle, sophomore
Hailey McLean started and pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs while throwing five strikeouts and walking four batters. She was relieved in the fifth by redshirt sophomore
Denay Smith, who allowed two hits and no earned runs the rest of the way.
