Game Recap: Softball |
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Utah State softball (22-25, 5-14 MW) dropped the final contest of a three-game series against New Mexico Sunday afternoon, falling 6-5.

For the third-straight game in this series, the Aggies got on the board first with a strong first inning. Junior infielder Giselle Gonzalez singled up the middle to bring in sophomore catcher Grace Matej from second for the game's first run. The Lobos fought back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, but the lead was short-lived as a double by sophomore outfielder Tatum Silva and an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Jaden Colunga put USU in front 3-2.

The next four runs belonged to the hosts, as New Mexico scored one in the third inning, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.

The Aggies didn't go away quietly, as a sacrifice fly by junior infielder Ariel Fifita scored junior infielder Claudia Medina in the sixth inning, then a home run blast over the center field fence by sophomore infielder Alex Bunton in the top of the seventh cut the lead to a single run, but that's as close as USU would get.

Utah State totaled seven hits to New Mexico's 10. Silva was the lone Aggie with multiple hits in the contest, tallying a single and a double.

In the circle, four different USU pitchers cycled in. Redshirt sophomore Denay Smith started and pitched a team-high 3.0 innings with five earned runs. Sophomore Tess Bumiller pitched the fourth, then sophomore Hailey McLean took over in the fifth to pitch 0.2 innings. Senior Jessica Stewart closed things out.
